Ljubljana Beyond The Old Town

Cross the river and the character changes. Trnovo and Krakovo, just south of the centre, are quiet residential streets with the kind of bars the Old Town has priced out of reach. Tivoli and Rožnik run west into woodland, and Metelkova and Tabor, to the east, hold the alternative scene. Further out, Šiška and Bežigrad are everyday Ljubljana, where locals actually live.

Ljubljana On A Budget

Slovenia uses the euro, and Ljubljana sits below Vienna or Venice on cost without being a bargain. The centre is small and car-free, so walking is free, and the Central Market is cheaper than the riverside terraces. Two days is the honest answer. Day one is the Old Town on foot: Prešeren Square, the Triple Bridge, the funicular up to the castle and the river banks, all inside a compact pedestrian core. Day two is for the excursion, and the choice is unusually good, because Postojna Cave and Lake Bled both sit within coach range. A third day adds the Soča valley or the coast without rushing.

Ljubljana lies in a basin, and from late autumn through winter that basin tends to collect fog while the hills above it hold sunshine. A grey morning in the centre does not mean a grey day a short drive away, and the reverse is true too, so it pays to check the forecast for the hills as well as the town. Early autumn can be just as fog-prone as midwinter, so the check matters beyond the cold months. If the valley is grey and the ridges are bright, head upward.
